Our Story

Grow By One is an initiative funded in partnership with Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava and the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce.

Its rationale is based in the fact that St. Lawrence County has approximately 4,000 businesses and that its unemployed population is approximately 4,000 people. Therefore, if every business could Grow By One there would be no unemployment problem.

This program also believes that the growth of many small businesses strengthens the future of the County’s economy adding diversity and reducing risk.

The Survey of Businesses

This effort began with a survey of businesses funded by Assemblywoman Scozzafava, conducted by the Clarkson Consulting Group, and sponsored by the St. Lawrence County Chamber. The survey was an attempt to determine what the impediments were for businesses growing by one.

What we found was that businesses:

• Lacked access to small amounts of cash
• Suffered from a small market
• Needed education on how to grow and take on employees.

Breaking Barriers

This program tries to break through those barriers as well as recognize those businesses that have Grown By One.
